A Croydon resident has secured a career opportunity in customer service thanks to the council’s decision to engage contractors with social value commitments, opening up new job prospects.
Last year, three new contractors were brought in as part of our plan to improve standards in Croydon's council homes which were neglected by the previous Labour Council. As part of their agreements, these contractors were required to demonstrate their dedication to upskilling and offering opportunities to locals.
Louis Bienaime, a Croydon resident, was recruited as an apprentice by Wates Group after joining Croydon College’s Construkt programme, which is backed by Wates. Before his apprenticeship, Louis had struggled to secure employment.
Through this support, Louis received guidance on CV writing, interview preparation, and teamwork skills. He now works as a customer service apprentice for Wates on Croydon’s housing maintenance contract.
Reflecting on his experience, the 23-year-old said the programme boosted his confidence, equipped him with essential knowledge and skills, and ignited his ambition to work in construction. He added: “And the result is me now working for Wates.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, commented:
“We’re really pleased to see how our partnership with Wates has benefited our residents, as well as our local community and the economy. We all know how vital it is to get work experience, apprenticeships, and work opportunities, especially for those starting their careers, to improve their life paths.
“It’s vital that Croydon’s young people have opportunities to thrive, learn and fulfil their potential. I wish Louis every success as he proceeds in his career.”
