My thoughts are with residents in the neighbouring borough of Merton who continue to be affected by the terrible incident on Galpins Road, particularly the family of four-year-old Sahara Salman, who sadly lost her life. I have written to the leader of Merton Council to offer condolences and support, and our staff will continue to support Merton as they help their residents during this difficult time.
Police have released the latest images of Owami Davies, last seen walking north along London Road from West Croydon to Norbury on 7 July. I know how much everyone wants Owami to be found safe and well and we are doing all we can to support the police in their missing person investigation. Thanks to those who attended our community meeting earlier this week to hear an update from the police and share any safety concerns they might have.
With the Amber weather warning predicted to continue until Sunday, please take care and look after yourselves and others. Very hot weather is particularly hard on children, older people and pets – so please do check in on friends and neighbours who might be struggling. We will be checking on vulnerable residents and working with our partners to help rough sleepers, providing suncream and water, and encouraging them into shelter. A particular plea around fire safety – London Fire Brigade are warning people not to BBQ in parks and to dispose of rubbish like cigarettes and glass carefully as it poses a real risk with the grass so dry. Please remember BBQs and bonfires are not permitted in any Croydon parks and none of us want to see a repeat of the recent fires in Addington Hills.
In other important news, the government has announced that all children in London aged 1-9 will be offered a polio booster jab to make sure they have the best possible protection against the virus. The NHS will contact you when it is time to book your child’s appointment – in the meantime more information is on the NHS website.
Finally, I was delighted to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Thursday with local community members at the Town Hall and helped raise the Pakistan flag on Friday, ahead of Pakistan Independence Day on Sunday. These cultural celebrations are so important within our borough, and I feel privileged to have been able to share in the celebrations with our community members. Together with our communities we will restore pride in Croydon.
