It is fantastic to see Croydon getting into the Platinum Jubilee spirit, with bunting out already and more than 140 Big Lunch street parties planned. This historic occasion is a great opportunity for Croydon to come together with friends, family and neighbours to celebrate, share memories and look forward to our future. I would like to extend my thanks to pupils and staff at Addington Valley Academy for inviting me to their Jubilee event yesterday, and Croydon Commitment for hosting the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Armed Forces Veterans Lunch today at Braithwaite Hall. Both were very enjoyable events and I hope as many of you as possible will join us for the Jubilee Beacon lighting at the Town Hall on Thursday 2 June.
Earlier this week, we held our Annual Council meeting – the first council meeting since I became Executive Mayor. I confirmed my priorities for action – from sorting out planning to getting the grass cut and the graffiti gone – but also how I want members across the chamber to work together. We have a chance now to hit the reset button for Croydon – and I am clear that this means making changes, restoring pride in our borough and most importantly working together to put our residents first. I am looking forward to working with all our councillors to make this happen.
Finally, Croydon marked another important occasion on Wednesday – the launch of our George Floyd Race Matters Pledge. Developed with our communities, this pledge is a powerful statement about the place we want Croydon to be – free from racism, discrimination and bias in all their forms. If you run a business, community group, school or any organisation in Croydon, I strongly urge you to make a difference by adopting the pledge. My thanks to everyone who has helped to develop the pledge and for all you are doing to make Croydon a better place.
