The victims and survivors of the Holocaust and those lost in other genocides across the globe were remembered at Croydon Town Hall today. Residents young and old came together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at a moving and thought-provoking commemorative event.
This year’s theme, Ordinary People, is an important and powerful reminder that we must work together, as ordinary people, to stand against hate and prejudice wherever we find it. The Holocaust must never be forgotten – we all need to continue to learn from the past and make sure that it can never happen again.
I want to take this opportunity to share with you that throughout the whole of next week, the Council will be running online and face-to-face workshops for anyone who is struggling with cost of living pressures. Our Croydon Healthy Homes team will be on hand to provide advice on energy saving initiatives as well as advice on how to access other supports and grants. You can also visit our website for more information on financial support, managing debt, benefits advice and employment and training to help during these challenging times.
At Wednesday’s Cabinet I spoke about my determination to kickstart the regeneration of the borough, despite the disappointing news that Croydon were unsuccessful in our bid for the second round of Levelling Up Funding. We will be working closely with Croydon Partnership to bring forward the stalled redevelopment of the Whitgift Centre, while making sure they deliver much needed town centre improvements and support for local businesses.
I want the Council to use all its powers to drive forward our town centre regeneration, from bidding for external funding, to doing everything we can to ensure the redevelopment of North End and other key town centre sites right across Croydon. To help make that happen I have reconvened the Mayor’s Town Centre Advisory Board this week to work with our partners in bringing investment into Croydon and driving forward this much needed regeneration.
Finally, it’s Great Mental Health Day in London today – let’s use this day to commit to looking after one another and finding out more about the brilliant local initiatives and services that are available to support our mental health and wellbeing right here in Croydon.
Have a great weekend,
Jason Perry
Executive Mayor of Croydon
