Tomorrow night Croydon will join thousands of communities across the UK and Commonwealth in lighting a Platinum Jubilee Beacon from 8.30pm at the Town Hall in honour of The Queen’s 70-year reign.
In Croydon we have our own royal history and many residents will remember Her Majesty’s visits to our borough over the years – from the opening of Croydon Technical College and Croydon College of Art in 1960, to the Golden Jubilee Tour in 2002. Visit the Museum of Croydon’s Jubilee digital exhibition to find out more.
The Platinum Jubilee is a great opportunity to share these special memories of Croydon with friends, family and neighbours across the generations but also, to create new ones.
The celebrations taking place across our borough, in all our communities, are a powerful reminder of everything that’s great about our borough and something that we can all take huge pride in.
I hope you can join me at the Town Hall tomorrow night to celebrate this historic moment and that our beacon can be a symbol of hope for Croydon’s future.
Have a great Jubilee bank holiday weekend,
Jason Perry
Executive Mayor of Croydon
